About Life Safe Medical Training
Advanced Care Paramedic Richard and his wife Julia established Life Safe Medical Training™ in 2017 the objective of creating a much-needed healthcare training center on Vancouver Island to serve our community's needs. Over the past nine years, we have collaborated with esteemed physicians, nurses, and paramedics to enhance our offerings and consistently deliver high-quality training.
Rick, ACP, Lead HSFI, NALSi, Course Director, Founder
In 2005, Richard volunteered at an orphanage in which he was unexpectedly recruited and trained as a firefighter first responder. Serving rural communities through his experiences, Rick became interested in medicine and healthcare education. Upon returning to Canada, he served the BC Ambulance Service until he was certified as a Care Paramedic, during which he practiced throughout British Columbia for seven years. In 2013, Rick obtained his Advanced Care Paramedic Diploma from Sask Polytechnic and subsequently began his training as a Critical Care Paramedic. After returning to BC and becoming a Heart and Stroke Instructor for BLS, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Rick and his wife, Julia, founded Safe Medical Training™ in 2017. He has advanced his professional development by achieving Naturopathic Advanced Life Support Instructor status and collaborating with healthcare professionals across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland to enhance essential training.
Dr. John McGaw, EMT-P, BSc, DDS, DSAT Course Co-Director
Life Safe Medical is proud to be working with world class educators like Dr. John McGaw. Dr. Mcgaw is a General Dentist at Driftwood Dental in Courtenay BC and has been providing general dentistry to the Courtenay and Comox Valley community since he graduated from the University of Alberta - Faculty of Dentistry in 1992.
He's been practicing sedation dentistry since 1994 and in 1997 received certification from the University of Toronto to provide multiple drug IV sedation.
Dr. McGaw is also an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor and Clinical Instructor in IV Sedation at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and for the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry - Dental Sedation and Anesthesia Training Program and other dental sedation programs.
He's also certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and throughout university, Dr. McGaw practiced as a Level III Registered Emergency Paramedic for the City of Edmonton (NAIT 1980).​
