Dental BLS Course Guide:

Compliant with the BCCOHP Standards of Practice

Meets the Standards for the Oral Health Team:

Professional Standard 2.7 (Maintaining Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities).

Beyond the Requirement:

Our Dental BLS course is fully compliant with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) and the latest 2025 ILCOR and Heart & Stroke guidelines. Our curriculum covers three distinct areas: core resuscitation science, dental-specific emergency integration, and mandatory hands-on 'High-Performance Team' components. These multi-rescuer scenarios are designed to incorporate equitable care and cultural safety, ensuring that team-based emergency protocols are delivered with respect and without discrimination for all patients. This training is accomplished when we come to your office on a pre-determined date that works with your schedule.

What Sets Us Apart:

  • Contextual Scenarios: We practice where you work. From syncope to cardiac arrest, we simulate emergencies in a dental setting.

  • Rapid Response Tech: Hands-on training with the latest AED and BVM (Bag Valve Mask) techniques.

  • Streamlined Certification: Efficient, evidence-based learning that respects your professional time.

We strip away the fluff and focus on high-performance CPR, airway management, and AED integration tailored to the dental operatory.

  • BCCOHP Standards: Fully aligned with current CE requirements.

  • ILCOR Driven: The latest science in resuscitation.

  • Team-Centric: Training that recognizes the unique roles of RDHs, CDAs, and Dentists.

Don’t just stay compliant. Stay ready.

What you will receive:

  • A BLS HCP Certificate Valid for 1 yr.

  • Confidence to lead your teams through unexpected dental emergencies.

  • The Dental BLS course can be combined with Mock Code Drills (BCCOHP compliant for all levels of sedation), making compliance easier.

Course Syllabus: Dental BLS-HCP (High-Performance Team)

I. Course Description

This course is a comprehensive, dental-specific resuscitation program designed for healthcare professionals (Dentists, Licensed Dental Assistants, and Registered Dental Hygienists). It adheres to the 2025 ILCOR Consensus and Heart and Stroke guidelines. II. Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Perform a rapid primary assessment and identify cardiac arrest in under 10 seconds.

  2. Demonstrate proficient two-rescuer Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM) ventilation with integrated oxygen.

  3. Deploy an AED and integrate it into a multi-rescuer resuscitation scenario.

  4. Manage dental-specific emergencies, including foreign body aspiration and sedation-related respiratory arrest.

  5. Deliver emergency care that aligns with HPOA principles of equitable care and cultural safety.

III. Core Curriculum (Modules)

  • Resuscitation Science: The Six Links of the Chain of Survival (2025 update including the Recovery link).

  • Airway Management: Mandatory training on BVM technique, oxygen integration, and choking (FBAO) for adult, child, and infant.

  • Team Dynamics: Multi-rescuer coordination and high-performance team roles.

Dental-Specific Integration:

  • Sedation Emergencies: Managing respiratory depression/arrest under IV or oral sedation.

  • Emergency Kit Review: Practical review of the BC dental office emergency kit.

  • Aspiration Management: Protocols for aspirated dental materials.

  • The Dental Chair Challenge: Performing CPR in a clinical operatory.

IV. Regulatory Alignment (BCCOHP QAP)

This course is specifically designed to meet the following professional requirements:

  • Standard 2.7 (Maintaining Competence): Provides evidence-based training to maintain and improve clinical skills.

  • Component B (Professional Learning): Students may log this course as a primary activity in their annual QAP portal.

  • Hands-on Requirement: Includes the mandatory in-person skills validation required for dental licensure and sedation facility accreditation.

V. Assessment & Validity

  • Practical Evaluation: Successful demonstration of high-quality CPR and BVM ventilation via a physical skills checklist.

  • Written Evaluation: Completion of a final modular exam.

  • Certification Period: Valid for 12 months from the date of completion to align with the BCCOHP annual cycle.

Note to Students:

As per the Modernized Quality Assurance Program (launched April 1, 2026), students are encouraged to utilize this syllabus for their "learning reflection" and to keep a copy of their signed skills checklist for their personal records.
